In this paper a global damage detection and assessment of structure algorithm, based on parameter estimation method using finite element and measured modal response of structure is presented. Damage is considered as a reduction in the structural parameters. Modal displacements (eigenvector) of structure are characterized as a function of structural parameter that yield an indeterminate set of equations. Elemental damage equations which relate partially measured mode shape of damaged structure to change of structral parameter are developed. An optimization function is used to solve these equations. Monte Carlo simulation is applied to investigate the sensitivity of this method to noise in measured modal displacements. The algorithm is tested in numerical simulation environment using a planer truss model. Results show the good ability of this method to detect any damage in structure in presences of noise in data.
