Tuned absorbers are attached substructures that are often used to reduce undesired responses in many dynamic applications. Typically, these tuned absorbers are only applied to affect one resonant frequency at a time. They are usually designed as a quick fix after production of the structure has begun and the problem of undesired response has occurred. A new concept, referred to as the Modally Enhanced Dynamic Absorber (MEDA), develops a substructure to de-tune a set of resonant frequencies and mode shapes over a target bandwidth. The de-tuning substructure is designed to have the same frequencies and mode shapes as the primary structure; this can usually be achieved with standard optimization techniques. The MEDA substructure has a tuned absorber effect on the modes used in the optimization of the MEDA. This concept therefore presents an improvement in multiple mode de-tuning with a single structure over a single mode tuned absorber approach. Several simple structural cases are presented to show the advantages of the Modally Enhanced Dynamic Absorber.
