The Role of the Occupational Safety Health Community in Road Safety

I am honored to be with such an esteemed group of occupational safety and health leaders from Asia, the Pacific Rim and from around the globe. Today, I want to talk about a global issue that requires our attention, focus and action. As an occupational safety and health official, it is an issue that you might not consider to be part of your primary mission. However, it is a problem reaching epidemic proportions around the world and I believe that the occupational safety and health community can and must work to address it. My many years in occupational safety and health have taught me that most occupational safety people are focused mostly on safety within the walls of their organizations—their factories or mines, offices and other facilities. Injuries that occur outside the workplace generally are often not considered part of their primary mission.
