SPECIAL SESSION 2A6 2B6 - GMES AND SCIENCE (1) (2)

This session provided the Envisat symposium participants with first-hand up-to-date information of the content and status of the joint ESA/EC initiative Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES), in particular on the progress of EU policy driven initial services definition in the three GMES areas of Ocean, Land, and Atmosphere. The session was structured in two main elements: Invited speakers summarizing key elements of research and GMES interaction; A panel discussion with key representatives from GMES stakeholders. Panellists were G. McInnes (EEA). H. Grassl (MPI), P. Valette (DG Research), J. L. Fellous (Ifremer). J. Achache (ESA) and M. Malacarne (DG Research) chaired the session. All speakers confirmed the importance of science within GMES. As an example, EEA views itself as the interface between science and environmental policy reporting with sound underlying science being seen as a critical element in the credibility of the analysis executed. The most visible elements of the GMES-scientific research relationship are: Inputs from the scientific community to GMES to strengthen existing services and in the definition of new services based on new research results; GMES setting a framework for structuring new science in responding to GMES priorities, developing new methods, models etc and in using data sources and products from GMES to support research in areas previously not addressed.
