As horizontal positioning at ceiling level of existing Fan Dry Coil Unit (FDCU) installation, the condensation and leakage of chilled water may take place and, thereafter, resulting a damage. Therefore, the objective of this study is to investigate and evaluate the performance of several preventative methodologies (schemes) for condensation and chilled water leakage of the FDCU system. Firstly, the original horizontal dry coils were modified to be V-type so as to contain the possible condensate or leaked chilled water. Secondly, the condensation detector and leakage detector were installed. Experimental tests were performed to evaluate the effectiveness of any condensation and the leakage of chilled water. Finally, the original positive-pressure of supply water system was changed to a negative one. A water check valve was installed on the welding point of the coil. This check valve was to simulate a leakage or a broken pipe of the coil. The situation of water-leakage was discussed. Experimental results show that the V-type dry coil can efficiently lead the condensate to the water tray. Utilized the condensation detector, surface condensation can be prevented. Negative-pressure water supply system proved to be a good option for the prevention of the leakage of chilled water.
