Optical microresonators can be used to fabricate ultra-low threshold Er lasers operating at 1.5 μm. They are ideal geometries to determine optical losses of a range of ion implanted materials. Si nanocrystal doped cavities (3% Si) show high Q (4×10{sup}6) and the challenge is now to fabricate a Si nanocrystal sensitized microcavity laser. Once the optimum fabrication conditions for such a laser are found, novel designs for sensitized amplifiers will follow naturally.
