Designing a Children's Web Portal using an Intergenerational Team

The Web is an important source of information for school projects, but young users do not always find it easy to locate relevant material. A critical factor in success is the portal through which they search or browse web content. Web portals have been designed with young users in mind, but there is little evidence mat the latter make use of them. We describe and discuss two low-tech prototype web portals intended for use by elementary school students and designed by two intergenerational teams comprising eight elementary students (11 and 12 years' old) and three researchers in one case, and six elementary students (8 and 9 years' old) and three researchers in the second case. We also draw conclusions from our experience of working with such intergenerational design teams.
