NBR/organo-montmorillonite/Zn(MAA)_2 nanocomposites were prepared by mixing intercalation method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results indicate that the galleries of organo-montmorillonite (HMMT and USMMT) have been enlarged as Zn(MAA)_2 polymerized in situ in rubber matrix and between layers. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) shows that the layers of silicate have been dispersed in rubber matrix at a nanometer level and out of order. Swelling test shows that Zn(MAA)_2 can not only graft and crosslink with NBR, but also intercalate into the interlayers of silicates so as to increase crosslinking density and T_g. The nanocomposites have much higher modulus, tensile strength and elongation at break compared with NBR/Zn(MAA)_2 composites, and the vulcanizates shows translucency.
