Study on aging properties of clay/natural rubber nanocomposites

Aging properties including thermal-air aging, ozone aging and photo-oxidation(ultraviolet) properties of clay/natural rubber (NR) nanocomposites were investigated in detail. As a comparison, the aging resistance of pure natural rubber and natural rubber composites filled with carbon black (N330) were also studied. The results showed that the aging resistance of clay/NR nanocomposites are better than that of the pure NR and the NR composites filled with corresponding amount of carbon black(N330). As an evidence for the improvements caused by the introduction of nano-dispersed clay, the thermal stability in nitrogen and oxygen of these composites were analyzed by means of thermal gravimetry(TG) at the same time. The result showed that the thermal stability of NR is improved by the addition of the nano-dispersed clay, especially in the oxygen atmosphere. This partly may be attributed to the reduction of the oxygen permeability of materials, as a result, the attack chance of oxygen to rubber molecular was depressed. The permeability of clay/natural rubber nancom-posite filled with different amount of clay was listed.
