Fluorine mostly comec from mold powders during the continuous casting process Developing and using free-fluoride mold powders is of importance to the environmental protection. In the current paper, titanium-bearing blast furnace slags (CaO-SiO_2-TiO_2) produced at Pangzhihua Iron and Steel Company (P.R.China) is used to be the base material to develop free-fluoride mold powders to inprove the heat transfer at the continuous casting mold. Effects of the reagent type, adding amount, basicity, TiO_2 content on the viscosity, melting point and crystallization temperature of free-fluoride mold powders are investigated. The indurtsial trial of the peritectic steel casting reveals a good surface quality of the slab, and well-controlled heat transfer at the continuous casting mold by the free-fluoride powder with perovskite instead of the usual cuspidine in the slag bearing fluoride.
