Modeling: a Necessary Step toward Virtualization

Consolidating small, often underutilized servers onto a large Symmetric Multi Processor (SMP) is an evolving strategy whose goal is to reduce operating costs while improving user service levels. To achieve the benefits that virtualization offers, selecting the appropriate (virtualization) technology, sizing the virtual host, and selecting applications that can best interoperate, while driving the virtual host to near saturation, is paramount. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of various virtualization technologies, and to describe an analytical and modeling approach to select virtual hardware and application, that goes beyond simply combining several low utilization applications onto a virtual host.
