An Object-Oriented Simulation Framework for use in Teaching Linear System Simulation

An object-oriented multi-purpose simulation framework is presented. The framework was originally developed for the purpose of teaching numerical algorithms with an object-oriented programming emphasis. It was later expanded for use in simulating the behavior of linear and nonlinear systems represented by block diagrams. Provisions were made to allow the use of the software for discrete-event simulation. An important feature of the software is that its functionality can, and in specialized circumstances must, be expanded using modules developed by the end user. The software simply provides the framework for validating and running a simulation block diagram, facilitating data input and output, providing timing and sequencing information to each component, and handling data and message flow throughout the simulation. Simulation components that make up the block diagram can then be developed in a language-independent fashion, utilizing the Common Object Model (COM) format. Alternatively, interpreted JScript modules can be developed for relatively simple components that are not time-critical.
