Simulation of the Impact of Power Grid Failure under Catastrophic Event

摘要

Studying the impact of power grid failure under a catastrophic event, such as natural disaster or terrorist attack, is critical for the preparedness of homeland security and national resilience. This paper presents an initial systematic model for the study, which includes power flow simulation module as the base, ArcGIS and Google Earth as the presentation layer, and expert system as the master control to integrate modules together. As a real test case, a power transmission system, EES_SOU Metro Districts in the NERC Eastern Interconnection is studied for various contingencies, such as major substations down due to flooding, and initial test results are discussed for potential impact to the power system itself and the society.
