Suspended solids in recirculating aquaculture systems, consisting mainly of faecal particles, are a significant part of the total pollutant load and failure to effectively remove them from the culture water can seriously impair water quality and fishperformance. Knowledge of the total amount of faecal matter produced and the physical properties of the effluent is important to enable predictions of suspended load to be made. Also, manipulating the properties of suspended particulate matter through diet design in order to encourage flocculation could lead to an increase in both the filtration efficiency and sedimentation rate, thereby decreasing the load on biofilters.
