CEYOGENIC PRESERVATION OF EMBRYOS OF PROCHILODUS LINEATUS (VALENCIENNES, 1836) (CHARACIFORME; PROCHILODONTIDAE)

While the freezing techniques of mammal embryos have been providing promising results, the cryopreservation of teleostean eggs and embryos have remained unsuccessful up to the moment (Ahammad et al., 1998). Since the early experriments by Blaxter (1953), the trials on cryopreservation of teleostean oocytes and embryos have remained unsuccessful, despite of the great effort from several researchers (Zell, 1978; Whittingham & Rosenthal, 1978; Haga, 1982; Harvey, 1983; Stoss & Donaldson, 1983; Erdhal etal., 1984; Zhang et al., 1993; Zhang & Rawson, 1998; Liu et al., 1999; Robles et al., 2003). The fish used as a model in the present study, Prochilodus lineatus, is a neotropical teleostean, widely distributed over southeastern Brazil (Fowler, 1951). This work aimed to develop a procedure of cryogenic preservation of embryos of P. lineatus and to observe, at both structural and ultra-structural levels, the morphological alterations that took place after application of freezing/thawing techniques.
