A cyprinid herpes virus 3 (CyHV-3) is very pathogenic for common carp and koi carp and induces highly contagious viral disease which causes significant morbidity and mortality, especially in fingerling. The virus is currently regarded as a DNA-virus of the Herpesviridae family. In concurrence with previous studies of Koi herpes virus (KHV), the virus that Pikarsky et al. (2004) isolated and designated the carp interstitial nephritis and gill necrosis virus (CNGV) has an icosahedron -shaped core of 100 to 110 nm, is an enveloped virus, and bears thread-like structures on the core surface resembling those of the herpes virus. Many authors suggested that CNGV and KHV to be the same and designate it as CyHV-3. The virus is often spread through shipmentsof healthy-looking common carp or ornamental koi. In Poland clinical signs of disease induced by CyHV-3 are often nonspecific and mortality may occur rapidly at temperatures between 18 and 22 deg C. Several closely related species cultivated with commoncarp, tench (Tinea tinea) or European catfish (Silurus glanis), sometime in the same ponds did not exhibit any symptoms of disease and were found to be fully resistant. The potential carrier status of other fish species, especially goldfish (Carassius auratus), has been controversial. In the spring of 2006, high mortality of common carp fmgerling and goldfish was observed in Polish farms. Our diagnosis of CyHV-3 was based on clinical signs and on our detection of CyHV-3 DNA from organs. The aim of thecurrent study was to isolate and identify CyHV-3 in goldfish and common carp fingerlings by PCR assays.
