GENETIC STUDY OF WILD SEA BASS (DICENTRARCHUS LABRAX L.) CAPTURED IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA

Sea bass is one of the main species responsible for the rising of aquaculture in the Mediterranean area. Several surveys have investigated the body composition of wild and reared sea bass (Krajnovic et al, 1994; Cagnetta et al, 1996; Alasalvar et al,2002). However, in a recent study carried out by our group, we could detect how 41 wild sea bass caught in the Mediterranean coast of Murcia had a profile compatible with animals reared in captivity (Abdel et al, unpublished results). A high hepatosomatic index (2.34±0.1%) and high muscular (2.3±0.4%) and perivisceral (4.92±0.33%) fat contents. The above specimens were genetically characterised in order to achieve a more deeper study. Mitochondrial and microsatellite molecular markers were analyzed.Both of them have proven useful in detecting the genetic differentiation between Atlantic and Mediterranean populations (Allegrucci et al, 1997; Cesaroni et al., 1997; Garcia de Leon et al, 1997; Allegrucci et al, 1999; Naciri et al, 1999).
