Adipose tissue is present in fish as sparids and salmonids, and the degree of adiposity changes seasonally, and is affected by diet composition. An excess of visceral fat storage can result in reduced product and quality. Nevertheless, the endocrine control of adipose tissue mobilization and storage remains unknown. Insulin and glucagon play a critical role in the control of nutritional situation in fish and are involved in lipid metabolism (Navarro and Gutierrez, 1995). In the present study, we assessed the effects of fasting, diet composition and the role of insulin and glucagon on adipose tissue lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activity as index of lipid uptake towards deposition in rainbow trout and gilthead sea bream.
