In 1981 we reported the initial synthesis of polymeric derivatives of cisplatin, the most widely used anticancer drug.1 Because of the socalled "trans-effect", the reaction between tetrachloroplatinate (II) and amines, including diamines, gives exclusively the cis product as shown below for 1,6-hexanediamine.
