Cells and biologically derived drugs have been extensively used to date to treat patients, and hydrogels are particularly attractive vehicles for delivery of these therapeutics, as they may be introduced into the body in a minimally invasive manner (e.g., injection) to avoid major surgery and reduce patient's pain.A number of different methods have been utilized to prepare gels from various polymers, including ionic and covalent crosslinking, and the intrinsic thermal phase transition behavior of certain polymers.
