Scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), flowability tests and particle size distribution (PSD) characterizations were performed on high impact polypropylene (hipp) particles. The goal of this study was to reveal the role of the isotactic polypropylene particle size on the morphology of the final high impact polypropylene product, and to study the origin of the EPR on the particle surface. Does this EPR flow through the porous matrix, or simply come from the existence of active sites on the particle surface. Preliminary results suggest that the polymerization of EPR inside the particle significantly deforms the isotactic polypropylene (iPP) matrix, and that only a small fraction of the EPR actually flows out of the particle. The amount that leaves the particle centre is a strong function of the viscosity of the rubber.
