Separation science plays an integral role in both the development of new radionuclides for diagnostic and therapeutic applications and the improvement of processes for the production of existing radiopharmaceuticals. Numerous methods have been described for the separation and purification of radionuclides for nuclear medicine, among them ion exchange, various forms of chromatography, and solvent extraction. Although the application of extraction chromatography has thus far been limited, recent advances in support and extractant design, in particular, the development of chromatographic resins exhibiting enhanced metal ion retention from strongly acidic media and the introduction of functionalized supports to improve the physical stability or metal ion retention properties of the resins, suggest that this technique offers great promise in the development of improved systems for radionuclide separation.
