The Virtual Film Crew project - work in progress on film making using online communities, computer mediated communication and collaborative VR

Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, has initiated a research project investigating how virtual reality collaboration, virtual project rooms and online communication can be used in film making. In film production, creative, technical and financial demands are often large and complex. Usually there are also artistic ambitions involved in the film production. Often, the production has to be produced within a certain time frame and with a wide variety of different competences and specialists involved, This makes film production an interesting field to study when it comes to distance collaboration technology. Today, film production is a collaborative process spread out over different geographical locations. At the same time, digital technology is used more and more often in the production itself, e.g. digital video and digital post-production. The use of virtual project rooms and computer mediated communication such as e-mail, intranets and file transfer become established. The basic question is, how can all forms of computer mediated communication facilitate film productions, making the production more efficient and stream-lined? So far, two case studies where independent film is produced using collaboration over the Internet have been thoroughly investigated, and several in-depth interviews have been conducted at post-production studios around the world.
