Headed reinforcement is a relatively new product and has not yet been used in many applications. To investigate the influence of bond characteristics on the splice behaviour three-dimensional finite element analyses have been carried out. Based on the numerical results, headed reinforcement appears to be an effective alternative to current methods of anchorage. When using headed reinforcement bars the bond length for overlapped splices without confinement can be reduced by nearly 1/3 compared to splices with straight bars.
