Kyushu University has a long history of activities in accelerator science. The first accelerator, 3 MV Van de Graaff accelerator, was installed in 1943, as one of the four earliest Van de Graaff machines in Japan. After a several years break during and just after the world war II, the machine came into operation in early 1950s. In the 1960s, the charging system of this accelerator was replaced by an originally designed pellet system and the terminal voltage reached to 7.5 MV in 1970. Following the success of the improvement on the Van de Graaff accelerator, the construction of the present tandem accelerator began in 1972. As in the case of the preceding machine, this accelerator was also constructed as a hand-made machine by direct contribution of stuff members and students of this university. In 1981, an acceleration with the terminal voltage of 11 MV was achieved, which was the highest acceleration per unit length among world tandem accelerators at that time.
