The Presidential Address Pumping Heat

In preparing this talk I am very much aware of two things, one is the content of previous addresses from my predecessors which is still relevant today, and the other is an awareness that in choosing the topic of heat pumps I am opening up a subject which has been discussed several times before, but always the same conclusion - nice technology but too expensive. Nevertheless I will proceed because heating and electric power generation capacity in this country are closely linked. I believe that Refrigeration and this Institute should declare a firm stake in the energy sufficiency and fuel poverty discussions which are taking place nationally, not only because of refrigeration's 15% consumption of electrical energy, but because refrigeration technology can be applied to reduce energy use.
