Increased engine output results in increased mechanical stress on the cylinder liners of a diesel engine. Regular maintenance of the cylinder liners by honing has therefore become an useful course of action for keeping liners in shape and reducing lube oil consumption. To prove our point we decided to make a study of the lube oil consumption before and after honing. The analysis in this case was made on Silja Line's "Silja Festival" with main engines 4 x Pielstick PC2.6V12. A complete overhaul was done on main engine No. 3. mid April, 2002. To get a good basis for our review we monitored the lube oil consumption every month over a 7 month period. The first check was done 3 months before the honing took place.
