In high pressure die casting processes, a die plays a critical role in removing heat from the molten metal during the cavity filling and solidification stages. Proper control of die temperature is essential for producing superior quality components and yielding high production rates. This paper proposes an on-line thermal management scheme based on a computerized Data Acquisition and Control System (DACS). hi this scheme, extra cooling water lines controlled by a pump and solenoid valves are hooked up to each established cooling channel. The system monitors the temperature signals from the die insert and flow rates from the cooling lines, respectively. Pump and solenoid valves can be actuated either automatically or manually to introduce additional cooling water to the die insert. The results obtained from the experiments carned out on a laboratory die casting process simulator indicate that an increase in pump speed can raise the flow ratetand consequently reduce the temperature of the die insert rapidly. Hence, the desired thermal pattern of the die insert becomes achievable.
