The Electron-Ion-Collider has been proposed to study in detail the fundamental structure of matter and the theory of the strong interaction, QCD. Despite large experimental and theoretical efforts over the past decades, several of the fundamental questions in this area remain open or incomplete. The proposed machine would collide electrons (positrons) and protons or nuclei at high luminosities and center-of-mass energies between 15 and 100 GeV. Both the electron and the proton beams would be polarised, thus giving acess to the spin struture of the nucleon. Fig. 1 shows the main parameters of the EIC in comparison with existing and planned facilities.
