EFFECTS OF CEMENT TYPE ON CONCRETE MATURITY

Maturity is a concept that accounts for the combined effects of temperature and time on the properties of concrete. Since 1940's, many maturity functions have been proposed. However, most of the functions were only tested for ordinary Portland cements. The investigations on maturity for different types of cements are inconclusive. For this purpose, different concrete classes (C20, C30 and C40) were prepared with four different types of cements which were ordinary Portland cement, Portland composite cement, sulfate resisting cement and blast furnace slag cement. The specimens were isothermally cured at 5, 20 and 40°C. Results revealed that Nurse-Saul and equivalent age functions were also applicable to cement types other than ordinary Portland cement used in this investigation. As a new method, the apparent activation energy for equivalent age function was determined from the relation between the degree of hydration and the rate of hydration, which was obtained from the experimental calorimetric hydration studies.
