The IMS-project (www.ims.org) EFSOT is an international integrated project on lead-free soldering. EFSOT develops advanced solutions for lead-free soldering and recycling technologies in electronics with lowest impact on human health, environment and resources. EFSOT has, in various aspects, a wide view on the lead-free issue in electronics. Geographically, EFSOT as an IMS-Project comprises participants from Japan, Korea and the European Union bringing together and exchanging different views and solutions for the lead-free soldering issue. Thematically, EFSOT covers the entire life cycle of (lead-free) soldered printed wiring boards and products, ranging from mining and solder manufacturing via assembly to end of life of PWBs. Scientifically, EFSOT combines expertise and research from manufacturing sciences, biology and medicine, recycling, life cycle and sustainability assessment experts. The objective of EFSOT thus is to offer advanced technological solutions for environment-friendly, sustainable lead-free soldering which are accepted internationally. This manuscript will give an overview of the project construction, and show some results from the ongoing project work. The authors acknowledge the support of the inter-regional EFSOT coordinator, Mr. M. Okamoto, Hitachi, Japan, which made possible this joint publication. The European EFSOT partners appreciate the funding of the project by the European Commission within the FP5 GROWTH Program under the contract number G1RD-CT-2002-00838.
