Achieving Best-in-Class Reliability Through Asset Performance Management

In recent years, Marathon Ashland Petroleum LLC (MAP) has established a program of proactive maintenance and reliability strategies to maximize its competitive advantage. This initiative has been centered on the implementation of a centralized asset performance management software system and the application of Best Practices. This paper will share the processes, challenges and lessons learned while undertaking this enterprise-wide reliability initiative, which has helped MAP establish asset standards and improve the maintenance decisions that reduce costs and improve reliability. MAP began by defining realistic reliability goals, which included improved data integrity and access, and used asset performance software to perform analyses that identify trends and patterns. The reliability effort at MAP is focused on its seven refineries, which are located in various areas of the United States, from the Gulf Coast to Minnesota. These refineries process nearly 1 MM barrels of crude oil each day, which involves the operation of more than 100,000 pieces of equipment. In an ever-increasing competitive climate, combined with significant, environmental, health and safety pressures, the ability to operate the plants at full production when the market forces dictate is critical.
