Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have become an effective and significant tool in gathering intelligence and prosecuting warfare tactical engagements throughout the world. There are numerous scenarios in which it is required to operate UAV control equipment realistically without actually flying UAVs. These scenarios would include Concept of Operations Development/Validation, Training, Mission Rehearsal, Testing and equipment design validation. This paper explores these non-flight environments and some of the decisions leading up to selection of a simulation configuration. The challenges include: Enabling the same human interface to the UAV control and monitoring equipment in both simulated and live environments; Implementing a cost-effective simulation environment; Incorporation of a realistic UAV flight simulator, preferably embedded with actual UAV flight software; Provision of a sensor simulation with generated imagery sufficiently realistic to meet all Training and other non-flight scenario objectives; Minimization of the simulation equipment footprint, especially important when the simulation capability is embedded in mobile command and control platforms.
