A discussion is given of E142 and E154, which were experiments at SLAC to measure the spin structure functions of the neutron by scattering polarized electrons from a spin-exchange polarized ~3He target. Also discussed is the ongoing impact of the data, together with some questions that deserve further investigation. Finally, the importance of the development of spin-exchange techniques is covered, both with regard to spin-structure studies as well as with regard to applications in medical imaging.
