A village flood protection scheme has been proposed to alleviate the flooding problem in Wang Chau, a low-lying area in Yuen Long north, in the New Territories of Hong Kong, China. The scheme comprises an intercepting channel system to collect stormwater from within the village surrounded by roads at higher level, an underground floodwater storage tank for temporary storing of the water, a pumping station to pump away the water in the tank, and an outlet main to discharge the water to Yuen Long watercourse. To confirm the hydraulic performance of the proposed pumping station, physical and mathematical models have been developed and used. During the modelling work, several minor problems have been observed and slight modifications of the original design have been proposed to mitigate the problems. This paper summarizes the major findings of the physical modelling work.
