We characterised different silica gels to obtain parameters, which are requiered for the selection of a suitable material for the elimination of odorous compounds form exhaust air streams. The data will also be required to describe the separation process mathematically. The silanisation conditions were optimised for 3-aminopropylsilanes, The influence of the silanisation condition on the stability of the adsorbents against water and ethanol were determined. The result of our work is a synthesis pathway to a variety of surface modified adsorbents. We determined the adsorption profile of modified silica gels, which happens to concur with the time dependency of adsorption. The adsorption profiles of XWP-based materials are promising for some kinds of odour problems, but the adsorption rate is not sufficiently high. The adsorption profile of untreated Kieselgel 60 is equalised the adsorption rate is high. For the modified adsorbents these changes are very small but need to be taken into account. For the application of selective adsorbents in odour control, further investigations are required. First of all, researches with a laboratory scale packed-bed adsorber will be conducted. The results will be evaluated and modelled.
