AN EFFECT ANALYSIS OF THE PEARL RIVER EMERGENCY WATER TRANSFER PROJECT FOR REPELLING SALTWATER INTRUSION AND SUPPLEMENTING FRESHWATER

Since the autumn of 2004, the strong saltwater intrusion occurred frequently in Pearl River Delta, which threatened the safety of water supply in Macao, Zhuhai city, Zhongshan city and Guangzhou city. According to the directions of the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters, the Pearl River Water Resources Commission Ministry of Water Resource, PRC implemented the emergency water transfer project for repelling saltwater intrusion and supplementing freshwater in Pearl River in January 2005. This paper aims to analyze and assess the effect of the project based on a great deal of field measured data and comes to a conclusion that the project has produced prominent effect in that it has created an advantage for freshwater supplement to the cities in the Pearl River Delta.
