Cold-formed steel channel sections have been used for many years in Australia, in portal frame construction, for agricultural and industrial sheds. Previous experimental testing has demonstrated that the conventional hot-rolled knee-joints are not suitable for these frames, and an alternative knee-joint has been developed at the University of South Australia, which uses self-drilling screws. This paper details the finite element modelling that was carried out using the STRAND7 program to complement the experimental test results obtained for the screw joint. The model developed demonstrated very good agreement with the experimental results and provided greater understanding of the joint behaviour.
