The friction stir welding method offers a number of advantages in terms of manufacturing, quality and strength characteristics. It has established itself in various applications, especially with aluminium structural components. Typically it will be used in shop manufacturing to join extruded open or hollow shapes together via longitudinal welds. Thereby, it will be often combined with traditional MIG welding, either for on-site additional attachments or for transverse reinforcing elements. Such crossing welds for example occur very often at decks of ship structures. In a series of initial static and fatigue experimental investigations the behaviour of friction stir butt welds crossed by MIG fillet welds has been investigated. The tests were performed either under axial tension load or in three-point bending. Resulting S-N curves are compared between the mentioned loading conditions and weld types. In addition, the applicability of the design curves in the ENV 1999-2 is verified by these experimental results.
