Launching represents a technical risk for each shipyard and needs careful theoretical treatment. By analyzing some problems related to launching (and drydocking, which is an equivalent problem) it was found that the classical rigid body theory has some disadvantages which leads to the situation that the predictions based on the theory may underestimate the loads. Although many attempts have been made earlier (e.g. KUNOW) to improve the theory, it was found that the improvement will only lead to better results if all relating input data, mainly the stiffness values are known with sufficient accuracy. Nowadays, where the development of computational power has drastically been improved, launchings can be accessed by direct simulations, which have to be backed by careful measurements. This paper describes recent developments in launching prediction methods and gives some examples of applications.
