Experiences about the behavior of stress in a brown coal pit

The guaranty of the stability of slopes in open-cast mining is one of the main tasks of engineering. Suddenly and uncontrolled occurring landslides represent the biggest danger for men and machines. In order to avoid such incidents, EDP-model calculations and geodetic measurements are executed. In the brown coal mine Belchatow seams are mined under difficult circumstances on an extensive mine field and in big depths. Because the geological circumstances were hard enough to explore, a pilot project started an in-situ-measurement program in the area Belchatow in 1999, which collect stress as well as deformations in the underground.
