This paper presents a method to obtain an optimal labyrinth seal configuration installed in a fluid turbomachinery. As an actually used labyrinth seal, there is a stepped type seals but optimum seal configuration is not studied. So in this paper, optimum seal configuration is studied from the view point of static and dynamic characteristics by changing the configuration of the stepped type seal. The governing equations are derived by using the equations of continuity and momentum equations. The static and dynamic characteristics are calculated for varying the configuration in order to obtain the optimal configurations of the stepped type seal. Thereby, the optimal combination of the straight and stepped type components is investigated. The evaluation items as a performance of the seal are leakage and effective damping coefficient as guideline of stability assessment of rotor system. The optimal seal configuration is obtained by the calculation result.
