BATCH-REACTOR WETLAND FOR DAIRY WASTEWATER TREATMENT:MONITORING SYSTEM AND PRELIMINARY PERFORMANCE

Small dairy operations are potential pollution sources within watersheds where constructed wetlands could beused effectively and economically for wastewater management. Several constructed wetlands built at small dairies in easternKansas are being operated as “batch-reactors”. This is a management system in which wastewater is transferred at setintervals from the storage pond and detained in the wetland for set periods. This paper describes operation of the batch reactor wetland and the monitoring system used to evaluate its performance. The considerations for a batch-reactor wetlandsystem’s design, construction, operation, management, monitoring, and analysis will be reviewed. Preliminary performancedata and analysis will be presented as a demonstration of how the data gathered using the monitoring system is being used forevaluation. The authors will comment on the effectiveness of the system being used to monitor performance and how thebatch-reactor wetland is performing at the current stage of the study.
