STRATEGIC ASSESSMENT OF THE POTENTIAL FOR RENEWABLE ENERGY RESOURCES IN EBRD'S COUNTRIES OF OPERATION

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and Black & Veatch Corporation have recently completed the first stage of a strategic assessment of the potential for renewable energy in the twenty-seven EBRD countries of operation (COO). Interwind AG conducted the assessment of the wind energy potential. The objective of this first phase is to identify promising renewable energy projects in the COO that may be candidates for EBRD investment. By the end of October 2002 we identified two groups of countries; Poland, Czech Republic, Russia, Ukraine, Hungary and Latvia, closely followed by Estonia and Romania are the most interesting countries for immediate wind energy development. These eight countries represent 75 - 80% of the estimated wind energy potential of the 27 countries of operation of the EBRD, which can be summarized as follows.
