SVC Refurbishment: a cost efficient method to extend the life of an SVC

Is it possible to refurbish SVCs in a reliable and cost effective way? Installations, which inherently required comprehensive control systems, were first installed in transmission systems in the early 1980's. Examples include HVDC converter stations and SVCs. At that time the technology used for Control & Protection (C&P) systems was "state of the art", but the analogue components used then are now obsolete. This paper is aimed to give some insights in this matter including the user's driving parameters for the project, available technique, and different alternatives for the refurbishment. It is based on a recent refurbishment project executed of NYSEG's Fraser SVC which was commissioned in 1988 and re-worked during 2001. In addition, the experiences from Eraser's SVC Refurbishment in relation to the existing number of aging SVCs around the world is addressed.
