Second generation biofuels, specifically fuels manufactured from lignocellulosic nonfood biomass feedstock, play a key role in reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and in generation of liquid energy carriers. The bioCRACK process represents a biomass-to-liquid concept technologically based on liquid phase pyrolysis. Liquid phase pyrolysis is expected to allocate high heat transfer and to avoid dust formation during the pyrolysis reaction. Spruce wood and wheat straw is the preferred lignocellulosic feedstock. Vacuum gas oil, an intermediate from vacuum distillation of crude oil, which can be transformed into gasoline and diesel fuel by means of fluid catalytic cracking, is the preferred heat carrier. Biomass is processed in vacuum gas oil at temperatures of 350 °C to 400 °C and ambient pressure. During liquid phase pyrolysis the feed is transferred into hydrocarbons, liquid CHO-products, reaction water, biochar and gaseous products.
