A techno-economic analysis of bio-oil stabilization for insertion into petroleum refineries and upgrading to transportation fuels.
The objective of this project is to evaluate the techno‐economic costs to stabilize bio‐oil fractions for insertion into petroleum refineries. Raw bio‐oil is the primary product of biomass fast pyrolysis – an emerging technology for biofuel production. Bio‐oil could be refined into gasoline‐ and diesel‐type fuels. However, complex oxygenated compounds and other impurities lend it unsuitable for upgrading in existing refineries. These reactive oxygenated compounds increase bio‐oil viscosity, water content, and degrade the quality of bio‐oil during storage. Bio‐oil stabilization involves a series of techniques that improve bio‐oil quality and allow for its long‐ term storage.
