Experimental studies were conducted to assess catalytic chemical vapor infiltration of carbon/carbon composites as a potential improvement to conventional chemical vapor infiltration processing. The catalytic material, Ni, was introduced into the substrates by wet impregnation. Catalytic carbon was infiltrated when infiltration gas mixture of C3H6/Ar/H2 were introduced at 500-1000°C for 1-3h. It was found that carbon filaments were formed at 500-700°C, and carbon particles were formed at 800-1000°C. In particular, the increment rate of density and the yield of carbon as high as 0.916g/ml/h and 90wt% respectively, were obtained at 600°C for 1h with 0.7wt% Ni.
