Catalytic Carbon Infiltration of Carbon-Fiber Substrates

Experimental studies were conducted to assess catalytic chemical vapor infiltration of carbon/carbon compositesrnas a potential improvement to conventional chemical vapor infiltration processing. The catalytic material, Ni, wasrnintroduced into the substrates by wet impregnation. Catalytic carbon was infiltrated when infiltration gas mixturernof C3H6/Ar/H2 were introduced at 500-1000℃ for 1-3h. It was found that carbon filaments were formed atrn500-700℃, and carbon particles were formed at 800-1000℃. In particular, the increment rate of density and thernyield of carbon as high as 0.916g/ml/h and 90wt% respectively, were obtained at 600℃ for 1h with 0.7wt% Ni.
