MESOPHASE PITCH-BASED CARBONS FOR SUPERCAPACITORS

Mesophase pitches from different precursors were subjected to chemical activation with KOH at 700°C. The porous structure of the carbons was characterized by physical adsorption of N2 at 77 K and immersion calorimetry into liquids of different molecular dimensions. The activated carbons presented good sorptive capacity and relatively wide micropores. Galvanostatic measurements showed the promising characteristics of these mesophase pitch derived-carbons to be used as active electrode materials in supercapacitors. Some materials displayed excellent capacities, above 400 F/g.
